11-22-24  Frisco Wakeland

Following Highland Park’s 48-0 win over Leander Rouse in last Friday’s bi-district match at Highlander Stadium, the Scots earned the right to face Frisco Wakeland this Friday at Plano’s Kimbrough Stadium.

The Scots had won their district championship two weeks ago and then registered another 10-win season by beating Rouse. Both accomplishments are state records, as is every game HP wins. This is ample proof that these guys are another “link in the chain” in one of the state’s storied football programs. No school has won more games in the history of Texas high school football.

Coach Randy Allen is the second all-time winningest high school football coach in the state’s history. Among active coaches, he is number one.

It’s a good thing that Coach Allen and Highland Park found each other. The result is turnover bucket full of state records that is unmatched. Doak and Bobby were wildly successful, Lance and Lott rolled over opponents and the Dickinson twins helped secure a state championship, but they can’t help the Scots on the field this Friday.

Or can they?

These former Scots and a few thousand others are “links in the chain” that include today’s HP players. There’s something real about the pride, heritage and tradition that Scots of all generations hold true.

“Scots Find a Way” doesn’t guarantee victory but it does guarantee excellent preparation, maximum effort and a deep-seeded belief that your teammates will do whatever it takes to win.

The Wakeland Wolverines have already caught the attention of the HP coaches and players. Three years ago the Scots and Wolverines squared off in the second round of the playoffs. It was a hard-fought game that either team could have won.

The score was knotted at 7-7 at halftime and 14-14 going into the fourth quarter. The Scots were ahead by one touchdown when the Wolverines put together the last drive of the game. A Wakeland receiver came down with a high “jump ball” catch in the end zone at the end of the game. The Wolverines went for two and were successful. They upset the Scots, 29-28.

Earlier this season the Wolverines played the state-ranked Frisco Lone Star Rangers in an incredible game that ended up 65-59. To read about the game and see who won, get a hold of this week’s Scots Illustrated and read about it in “Before the Kickoff”.

Against Wakeland, the Scots will face one of the best receivers they’ve seen this season in 6’3” Ryder Treadway. He caught passes for 1,155 yards last year (a school record) and has 922 yards so far this season. The Wolverines running back, Aidan Poole is a thousand-yard rusher. And quarterback Jayden Maples has thrown for 2,592 yards this season, compared to HP’s Buck Randall’s 2,522.

The way the Scots have battled the past two games, they will be very competitive if they can keep it up. Their offense is lethal when it is hitting on all cylinders – like scoring on every first half possession last week against Rouse – while the defense held Rouse to three yards rushing.

The Scots probably won’t be that dominant this Friday but they will be mentally and physically ready to battle.

After all, they are another “link in the chain”.
