On Friday the 6-3 Scots will conclude their district 6-5A competition as they face 2-7 Newman Smith at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton. The Scots are district champions with a 5-0 record and with their October 2 win over Richland they have secured the number one seed in the playoffs regardless of the outcome of the Newman Smith game.
Meanwhile, HP’s neighboring district (5-5A Div. I) will sort out its playoff teams this weekend. Actually, by Thursday night at 10:00 we should know who the Scots will face in the first round of the playoffs next weekend at Highlander Stadium.
Here are the Cliff Notes:
Frisco Lone Star (9-0) is ranked second in the state in 5A Div. I. They should beat McKinney North (7-2) on Thursday. Frisco Reedy (6-3) should defeat Frisco Centennial (2-7) on Thursday and Melissa (6-3) should beat Frisco Liberty (0-9) on Friday. So the playoff rankings should be Frisco Lone Star, Melissa, Frisco Reedy and McKinney North, in that order. Of course, this is Texas high school football, so anything can happen.
I predict that when the dust clears, the Scots will host the McKinney North Bulldogs in the bi-district round.
Usually the top seed in one district will easily knock out the fourth place seed in the next district over. But if things unfold the way I think they will, HP will face a tough McKinney North team that was 7-1 two weeks ago.
But the playoff seeding is just background noise while the Scots stay focused on taking care of business with Carrollton Newman Smith this Friday.
The Trojans come into the game with two wins. They beat Frisco Lebanon Trail, 26-20, on September 4, and they trounced Carrollton R,L. Turner, 40-6, on October 23. For the season the Trojans are averaging 15.5 points per game and allowing 36.4. The Robertson boys are handling most of Newman Smith’s yardage. Quarterback Rashaad Robertson leads the team in passing with 23 completions on 56 attempts for 314 yards and two touchdowns. Backing him up is Reagan Robertson who is also the third-leading receiver and the fourth top rusher on the team. Then we have Ryan Robertson who is the team’s leading rusher with 442 yards and three touchdowns on 95 carries. Zion Williams is the team’s best skills player not named Robertson. He is the third leading rusher and third leading receiver in terms of yardage gained.
In the battle of Carrollton schools, Newman Smith lost to Creekview, 10-8, and beat R.L. Turner, 40-6, so they are right in the middle of the pack.
This Friday the Scots hope to play well against the Trojans, develop a lead and then let backups see some significant game action.
The bi-district game next weekend at Highlander Stadium will be general admission, so if you have season tickets they won’t work in the bi-district game. Come early and claim your seats ... unless someone comes earlier and claims them first. At that point you can pick any other seats in the house. Everyone wins!
